“What is the desi ghee price for 1kg?” is one of the most common questions buyers ask, and the answer varies a lot from brand to brand. In this guide we explain why desi ghee prices differ, what you should expect to pay for cow, buffalo, A2 and bilona ghee, and how to make sure you are paying for pure ghee rather than a cheap blend.

Why Does Desi Ghee Price Per Kg Vary So Much?
1. Type of milk
A2 milk from native desi cows is the most expensive, because desi breeds give less milk. Cow milk generally costs more than buffalo milk for ghee-making.
2. Making method
The bilona method makes ghee from curd and needs around 25–30 litres of milk per kg of ghee. The cream (malai) method used by most factory brands needs far less milk and labour, so it is cheaper.
3. Batch size
Small-batch, hand-churned ghee costs more to make than ghee produced in large industrial plants.
4. Purity
Ghee mixed with vanaspati, refined oil or starch can be sold at a much lower price. If a “pure desi ghee” is priced far below the market, be cautious.
5. Packaging and delivery
Glass jars, tins and doorstep delivery all add to the final price.
Desi Ghee Price by Type
Cow ghee price 1kg
Mass-market cow ghee made by the cream method is the most affordable. Bilona desi cow ghee costs more because of the curd-churned process, and A2 bilona ghee is at the top end. Nanak bilona cow ghee is ₹1,550 per kg.
Buffalo ghee price 1kg
Buffalo ghee is usually the most budget-friendly pure ghee, as buffalo milk is richer in fat and yields more ghee. Nanak bilona buffalo ghee is ₹1,200 per kg. Not sure which to choose? Read cow ghee vs buffalo ghee.
A2 ghee price 1kg
Genuine A2 bilona ghee is the premium segment. Nanak A2 desi cow ghee is ₹2,200 per kg. Learn more in our A2 ghee meaning guide.
Is Cheap Desi Ghee Worth It?
Not always. Since ghee is something you eat every day, a slightly higher price for pure, traditionally made ghee is usually worth it. A low price can mean lower-quality milk, the cream method, or adulteration. You can check any ghee yourself with our home purity tests.
How to Save on Pure Desi Ghee
- Buy bigger packs: 2kg and 5kg packs cost less per kg.
- Buy direct: buying from the maker avoids middlemen margins.
- Use it wisely: 1–2 teaspoons a day is enough for most people to get the benefits of desi ghee.
